The Statuette: Elan
The official statuette for the Canadian Awards for the Electronic and Animated Arts is named Elan.
Elan is comprised of two figures molded together suggesting a slight likeness to the ancient Greek Gods. El is from the first two letters in Electronic and is the God of Electronic Gaming; An is from the first two letters of Animation and is the Goddess of Animation.
The statuette has the figure of a woman (An), mostly featureless, looking skyward representing the future. She is holding in her hands high above her head a frame which represents both a computer and television screen. Standing at her back and mostly molded together is the figure of a man (El), again mostly featureless. The man is also looking skyward (into the future) and is holding the world above his head, coming through the middle of the woman’s screen representing world communications. The continents of the world are sketched and Canada is etched in as this year these are Canadian awards.
History:
Holly Carinci, Producer of the CAEAA, conceptualized both the statuette and the name, Elan. Her biggest fear was that the figure for the statuette would never be created the way she envisioned it. She need not have feared: Prominent Canadian artist Dean Lauzé accepted the producers commission to bring into being the artist rendering and the sculpture from which the subsequent mold of Elan will be created by Vern Gorham of Across the Board Creations whose company motto is: If you can conceive it, we can achieve it, so dream big.
A classically trained artist, Lauzé benefited from the private mentorship of the acclaimed lithographer Mircho Jackabow and such luminaries as the graphic designer, Paul Kuzma and sculptor John Weaver. Lauzé has extensive experience in most drawing and painting mediums, print-making, sculpture and graphic design. Lauzé has earned renown as one Vancouver’s top commercial artists and has built his reputation on the principles of integrity and excellence. Dean Lauzé and his wife Christina and their team of five make up D’Arts, a commercial art company which integrates classical skills with modern innovations, and it is for these reasons that the Producers of the CAEAA chose Lauzé. “We felt that Dean was the perfect choice as the artist who would craft our statuette as the industries we are awarding create much of their work using the same two methods of art”, explains Holly Carinci.
Some of Dean Lauzé and his D’Arts company’s work includes the bronze Unity Statue in Abbotsford Civic Square, the 7-foot-high hockey cards in the corridor at GM Place, nine of the Orca whales and seven of the Spirit bears displayed around Vancouver. His stunning mural work is seen in countless locations and is commissioned privately for homes as well as companies such as Mercedes Benz and Bell Canada.
